There has been an influx in dance-based workouts, like Zumba, over the last few years; especially for older adults. Dance-based fitness is a unique way to have fun while exercising. The benefits run far beyond just physical benefits including higher levels of social engagement, improved brain structure even improved mental health. A study done in 2017 demonstrates that dance for older adults improves balance and brain health through positive changes in neuroplasticity. While traditional exercises such as walking, swimming, and weight training are beneficial; dance provides unique advantages for older adults.
Dance-Fitness Improves Motivation to Exercise
Some seniors might struggle to maintain a regular workout schedule with more routine activities like walking or gym-based exercise. Making exercise a joyful experience through dance improves motivation to exercise. Zumba specifically is a dance-fitness program that combines Latin and international rhythms with high-intensity cardio moves, creating a fun and effective workout experience for people of all ages and fitness levels. The Zumba company also has a program called Zumba Gold that provides the same benefits as the general Zumba class but, tailored to older adults. The upbeat music and fun atmosphere make it easier for older adults to stay motivated and committed to regular exercise, contributing to long-term health benefits.
Physical Benefits
Zumba Gold, the modified version for seniors, is designed to be low-impact, making it accessible for older adults while still providing significant physical health benefits. The movements included in the workout strengthen the heart and lungs while protecting the joints. Furthermore, moving to the music allows older adults to challenge and improve their balance and coordination. Because of the movements incorporated in this type of dance, older adults may improve their range of motion even more than when participating in traditional exercise. Zumba adds the additional challenge of rhythm and multi-directional movements, which engage different muscle groups and overall strengthen muscles, joints, and bones throughout the entire body.
Beyond Physical Benefits
Because of the positive and fun nature of Zumba classes, many participants have time to bond both during and after class. With any type of dance-fitness, you have the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone; and when others are doing the same, participants tend to create more meaningful and lasting friendships. In addition, studies show that dance-fitness can help combat depression and anxiety, boost mood, and improve cognitive function. So, taking part in this modality of fitness can inherently improve one’s thinking, ability to learn new tasks, and help maintain memory strength.
All modes of exercise are beneficial for health in older adults. But the uniqueness of dance-fitness—and Zumba specifically—brings even more benefits. The low-impact nature of the class promotes a safe and enjoyable way to improve cardiovascular fitness, increase muscle strength and improve flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination. Additionally, by finding the rhythm and moving in different directions, you step out of your comfort zone, which helps you build meaningful friendships and stay motivated to attend classes regularly.
