Food, water, and shelter are well-known as the basic physiological needs for survival. To thrive in all seasons of life, more is typically needed. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Figure 1), the two levels you need once your basic needs are met include safety, security, love, and belonging. Both levels of needs require maintaining social relationships.

Maintaining social relationships can become challenging as we age. However, nurturing friendships is essential for enhancing our quality of life, especially in later years. Although this task may seem difficult, it is not impossible.

Tips for Maintaining Friendships

Making the transition into retirement living can be overwhelming. There’s a complete change in scenery and structure. However, staying connected with your loved ones is so important for your health and well-being.

Technology plays a vital role in staying connected. So, whether it’s scheduling phone calls, becoming a pro at texting or staying active on social media, you should continue to make an effort to stay connected  with your loved ones.

Meeting New People

Moving into a retirement home is a big transition. But there are many organized activities and schedules in place to help you easily build new friendships and connections. Group fitness classes, art class, book clubs, and card games are popular here at Delmanor West Village. We aim to create opportunities for residents to meet new people and engage in shared interests. These activities stimulate the mind and body and help cultivate friendships, fostering a stronger sense of community.

In addition to our recreation programming, we provide comfortable communal areas around the community to promote engagement. Whether you’re stopping at the Bistro for a snack, are interested in playing pool in our lounge, or want to dine with new people, we have the structure for you.

Lastly, volunteer work is a phenomenal way to stay active, engaged, and social. There are numerous organizations within Toronto and opportunities within our own community to volunteer in an activity you are passionate about. Volunteering instills a sense of purpose and engagement, especially when navigating a new living arrangement.

Overall health and wellness are not complete with just food, water, and shelter. There are many layers to wellness that require social connections. By maintaining life-long relationships through technology and creating new friendships by participating in recreational activities, connecting with others at meals, and volunteering, you are certain to keep your social health and well-being strong.
